In the USA when you leave your home and go out on the street you give up your right to privacy and are fair game to be photographed. But the photograph can not be used for commercial purposes-only journalistic or art. I have heard that in Europe this is not the case and the privacy laws have pretty much ruined traditional candid street photography. Is that true? I infer it may be from your statement above.

well, actually, i don't have the certainty that taking candid pictures of people in the street is reprehensive (without a commercial end), but i prefer take this precaution.
I should look for the text where it's mentioned.
Anyway, I totaly agree with you, this "outside privacy" is really a shit thing.
One can see people turn around when a lens points at them.
